Environment and Human Health Inc. (EHHI) has been sounding the alarm about health risks from environmental hazards since its inception over a decade ago.

EHHI is made up of nine members who are physicians, public health professionals and policy experts. Many of these are Yale University professors and doctors who work tirelessly to protect our health from environmental harms through research, education and promotion of sound public policy.

Our Accomplishments

EHHI's rigorous studies and resulting policy recommendations have led to landmark legislation, with many initiatives successfully implemented in other states.

EHHI's reports have detailed health risks from exposures to hazardous chemicals which have led to legislative changes that now protect the health of children riding school buses, playing on school athletic fields, eating more nutritious foods in schools, and being better protected from pesticide and diesel exposures.

EHHI's ground-breaking research reports include:

  • A school nutrition study that revealed the deplorable state of nutrition and physical activity in schools;
  • An asthma study that surveyed school nurses and detailed the high rates of asthma among elementary children and laid out the model for how to track asthma in school children;
  • A study of  diesel exposures to children on their school buses which showed they were being 5 to 10 times more heavily exposed than in the ambient air;
  •

  • A study of the health risks of lawn-care pesticides which include what chemicals are actually used and how they are - or are not - regulated;
  • A study in the risks for  breast cancer which includes a questionnaire to help women understand and accurately evaluate their risks for this disease;
  • A study on the health risks of vehicle exhaust, showing what vehicles contribute how much pollution and what the health effects of this are;
  • A study on the health effects of some plastics, including phthalates and bishenol A including where these chemicals are found;
  •

  • A study on the recycled ground-up rubber tires in artificial turf playing fields that includes the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station's initial study which  found they contained many toxic chemicals that could escape into the air and leach into the water.
